Dear Dearest Mother

Dear Dearest Mother venerates classic photography, the lost art of letter writing, and the relic from the battlefield. This year—2015—marks the one-hundred-fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Civil War, the seventieth anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi's concentration camps, and the fortieth anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. These commemorations have inspired Dear Dearest Mother, a portfolio of still-life montages composed from the keepsakes of war and military veterans.

One of these veterans is my father-in-law. The discovery of his British Army book and journal from World War II, filled with snapshots and secret correspondence, propelled my search for historic memorabilia that stirs the visual imagination. In my quest, I found a letter that a West Point cadet wrote home to his mother in 1842, a few years before he posed for a daguerreotype. "Dear Dearest Mother, I have been homesick." *

From daguerreotypes to digital imagery, the portraits of servicemen and women included in these still-life montages represent milestones in the evolution of the photographic medium. Photographers dedicated their lives to recording epic moments during military conflicts. In my compositions, though, I only incorporate pictures discovered in my subjects' archives. My artist's palette is made up of tattered cloth, sepia photographs, smudged documents, and maps—visual mementos that encapsulate the veterans and their families' emotional and historic journeys across time and space.

* Brigadier General Gordon's Civil War saddle, photographs, and original letters are in the collection of the Framingham History Center in Massachusetts.
